Frugal Friday File 2017, week 12...

Successes:
1.  I worked three days this week.  I took my lunch all three days.

2.  We cooked dinner at home all week and packed extra servings into the freezer for Carey to take to work.

3.  We have had some irritation with the cable service lately.  Carey wants to go back to satellite.  I reminded him that a little irritation is better than the huge satellite bill.

4.  My knee is acting up.  Today it collapsed under me while I was trying to run errands on my lunch hour.  I went down...in public...highly embarrassing...but nothing broken, so I survived and was able to return to work and finish out the day.  But once there I got a paper cut.  And the branch got audited.  Why am I always working alone when the auditors stop by?  So happy I was able to get back to my post and they didn't show up to find a deserted office.

5.  I was going to buy my mother-in-law a birthday card...was on my way into the store when...see #4 above.  I think she's getting another handmade card this year.

Keep Tryings:  The dishwasher part that Carey ordered was $168...and it didn't fix the problem.  Grrrr.

Frugal From the Kitchen This Week:
Saturday:  Shepherd's Pie
Sunday:  Sunday family dinner at Kasey's
Monday:  roast, potatoes, carrots, gravy
Tuesday:  meatloaf, twice-baked potatoes, corn
Wednesday:  spaghetti, garlic toast
Thursday:  leftovers
Friday:  ???

  1. How do you make your Shepherd's Pie? I didn't see the recipe on your food blog.

    1. LOL I make such a cheater version, that I'm embarrassed to tell you how I make it. It's one of those things I make that Carey loves for reasons that I don't really understand. And since I use beef, it's really not 'shepherd's' pie at all.

In an oven safe skillet, brown 1 lb ground beef season to your taste with salt, pepper, garlic, and dehydrated onion flakes.

Drain a 15 ounce can of green beans, an 8 ounce (?) can of corn, an 8 ounce can of sliced carrots, and an 8 OR 15 ounce can of tomato sauce (depending on whether you like more or less liquid in the base) and stir into the browned ground beef.

Make 6 servings of instant mashed
potatoes and spread over the top of the meat/vegetables. Sprinkle with grated cheese and bake at 350° F for 30 minutes or so.

Now I could cook fresh vegetables, but I told you this is truly a cheater recipe. One of those things I make when I really don't want to cook at all but have to feed the hubs. And he would actually like me to make it more often than I do. LOL

  2. So sorry to read about your fall, but thankful you didn't break any bones! Embarrassment is better than crutches or a cast.... I think a handmade card is much nicer than a purchased one anyday. I'm sure your MIL will appreciate your time, effort and creative touch!

    1. Oh, Linda, I am SO glad I survived unscathed! I think I've have come up with an idea for a handmade card for her. :)

  3. Hope you have no aches and pains from the fall. Our dishwasher was fixed with the new pump/heater but it did cost £180. Still, better than having to buy a new dishwasher

    1. I wasn’t taking any chances. I called my chiropractor when I got back to the office and asked if she might have any late afternoon appointments. She squeezed me in at 5:45. I could not afford to be out of commission today as I was alone in the office, with both of the regulars being out of town.

My husband is ready to ditch the dishwasher and just go buy a new one. I roll my eyes every time I think about it, but he’s very industrious, so I can only assume that it gave him a terrible time. I’m glad yours is working again!

    1. And the healthiest! …unless I cut myself with the paper cutter or burn myself with the hot glue gun. :)

  5. Sorry about your knee. That's happened to me before. One instance where my knee buckled was in the Lowe's parking lot.

    1. Isn’t that uncontrolled falling in public the worst? Oh my goodness, a bystander went into the store and he brought back an employee with a wheelchair!!! Please look away, and just let me crawl back to my car and leave! :)

I have had a lot of really gross spam comments left lately, so I am having to turn comment moderation back on. To my nice blog friends, my apologies if this makes it more difficult for you to comment. To the mean naughty-talk spammers, just go away!
