Seven random thoughts on the 7th...

1. It is often difficult for me to come up with a photograph to accompany these '7' posts. I am not quite sure what the subject of the above photo actually is. I think it is some kind of a game die, and I believe it is really old, though I'm not sure. It is made of clear glass, and the printing around the zero says 'MADE CZECHOSLOVAKIA.' It's just one of those cool things hanging around our house. It has lived in a sewing machine drawer for as long as I remember. If anyone knows what it is, I'd welcome a clue.

2. I really must practice going to bed and getting up earlier. I mean really.

3. I have been doing a lot of reading in the last couple of months, and I notice that really good books seem to be fewer and further between than they used to be. Is this a sign of getting old? Or maybe I'm just not choosing well...or maybe I'm more distracted than before. Could anyone reading this leave a comment with the title of a favorite book or two, please? My favorites are Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet and Shadow Woman by Thomas Perry.

4. Winter food = comfort. Tonight? Acorn squash baked with slices of link sausage in the scooped-out centers drizzled with a little maple syrup.

5. Happiness is being close enough to drop in for flash cards and goodnight kisses from the munchkins.

6. Another work week begins. Laundry...check. Coffee ready for in the morning...check. Gas tank filled...check. Prescription refill called in...check. Hair appointment made...uh-oh.

7. Football season is over...baseball spring training is right around the corner. I really gotta get another tv for the bedroom.

  1. I know what you mean about finding the really good reads, I read alot but it does seem to take longer between the good ones. Also, I have noticed I can't concentrate as well as I used to (they say that is part of premenopause ;(

Rob just finished reading the new Ken Follett and really enoyed it.
Maybe you would as well :)

    have a great Tuesday

  2. Susan Wittig Albert is writing a series of Beatrix Potter that is absolutely wonderful. It's a cozy mystery along with talking animals (that the humans can't hear) I have read every one in the series except the last. it's on my list for this year. I listen to audio books, but her writing is so entertaining, I actually READ these. read them in order - much more fun. http://www.cottagetales.com/books/index.shtml

I'm glad it's not just me then. :) And I read and liked the new Ken Follet book too.

Hi Diana, thanks for the book series recommendation. They sound really interesting, I'll have to see if I can find them.

  5. Hi Sarah, This predates Dungeons and Dragons, but I'm pretty sure it does have to be some kind of game die. It has 30 sides.

  6. Hi Kathleen - I think we just get more discerning as we grow older, because I agree - good books seem fewer and further between these days.

Recently read Room by Emma Donoghue - best book I've read in a long time, and well worth a try.

  10. Lynne! Thanks so much! That is it exactly, and the photo also has a game sheet that goes with it...it's like a more detailed precurser to the Magic 8 Ball!

I have had a lot of really gross spam comments left lately, so I am having to turn comment moderation back on. To my nice blog friends, my apologies if this makes it more difficult for you to comment. To the mean naughty-talk spammers, just go away!
