Miss Hargreaves by Frank Baker
Terra from Terra Garden, a self-described bookaholic, recently described Miss Hargreaves as "so amazing and original" that it made her list of 20 top favorite all time novels she's read. So of course I had to promptly go track down a used copy. :)
Thanks for the suggestion. I just ordered a used copy as my library doesn't have it.
