Capturing December Challenge, day 1...

I snagged this photo-a-day challenge from Pamela at The Lady of the House Speaking.  My first thought was that it might benefit me to participate.  I'm hoping that, in order to get a photo each day, it will keep me moving toward readiness for the holidays.  Christmas Eve usually finds me madly wrapping packages; I don't want to be doing that this year.

This was my view today:

My public library has a Pinterest page, and one of their recent pins features a book-lover's Christmas tree from The Decorologist.  Love!  I began putting mine together last night.  Then I took a break.  After examining it at each pass by, I disassembled it and began again.

There are children's books, antique books, much-loved favorite books, picture books, hobby books, board books, big books, small books, Little Golden Books, fairy tales, biographies, poetry, classics...

I'm quite happy with the shape now.  I will add a few more 'ornaments' and some mica snow when I come across them while emptying out the closet where all the Christmas decorations are stored (I haven't started on the other decorating yet).  In the meantime, it makes me smile even unfinished.  Carey got home from the hunting lease today, and was duly impressed.  :)

  1. I love it - so pretty! I really should make one of these, I have some beautiful Christmas books with red and gold spines - very festive! I've seen this done as an Advent calendar for children as well - 24 wrapped boxes to enjoy in the days leading up to Christmas.

  2. Thanks, Pamela! It was fun to hunt down books and play with their arrangement...though not as easy as I thought it would be...had to keep looking at it from all sides so it didn't go wonky. :) Always glad to get a chance to use an antique doily too.

  3. What a great idea! Just Christmassy enough for early December decorating. I would love to have a go at making one but most of our books are now packed in boxes ready for moving house.

    1. Thank you, Catherine! Moving preparations over the holidays are so unsettling! To this day I still feel bad that we didn't have a tree for our daughter's first Christmas, because we were in the middle of a move. I ended up taping a string of lights to the wall in the shape of a tree! LOL Good luck with the moving!

  4. So are they simply stacked? (Surely not drilled or glued?)
I need more details. It is really lovely. I also like the photo a day idea....

    1. Hi, K2. They are just stacked on a cake pedestal; no damage done to the books at all, and can all be put away after Christmas. The lower layers have more than one book, so you have to make sure they have the same thickness so that the whole thing doesn’t start leaning. I printed out an enlarged photo of the inspiration photo, so that I could reproduce the construction pretty closely.

I have had a lot of really gross spam comments left lately, so I am having to turn comment moderation back on. To my nice blog friends, my apologies if this makes it more difficult for you to comment. To the mean naughty-talk spammers, just go away!
