Cotton-pickin' summer...
It is SO! DARN!! HOT!!!
Friday my plans got sidetracked, so I went down south with Carey on a very important day trip. Once we were done with the important stuff, we took a little tour around our old stomping grounds.
For years, every time I visit around this time of year, I wish I could take pics of the cotton crops sitting in the field waiting to be picked. This time I actually had the camera with me, and I even had a cooperative driver. But I'm still wishing I could have another chance at it. The sun was SO bright, it was difficult to tell what I was actually getting; and it was SO HOT that I just couldn't bear it for more than a few minutes. Our trusty old truck even started overheating, so one chance was all I was allowed.
These photos were taken in a field that had already been sprayed with defoliant. Most of the fields had already been picked. Huge truck-size bales (modules) sat covered in the fields, waiting for completion and delivery to the gin. The highways are all edged with white fluff that has flown off of trucks. It always seemed like such a shame that it goes to waste. My mother said that when she was young, families would walk along the roads and pick up the cotton that had fallen and sell it to the gin.
I love how the open bolls look like flowers.
Okay, Mr. Sun. You've helped the cotton burst forth. It's time to cool things down a little.

Art Race...
I think I've said before that I am SO over the reality tv era. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised to find something new and entertaining in that vein to watch tonight on the Ovation channel. Art Race is a series of half hour programs.
Two artists compete. One starts in NY and heads west. The others starts in LA and heads east. Each are allowed only one dollar and a backpack full of art supplies to start. They must rely on their artwork to beg/barter for food, lodging, and transportation. I'm not too clear on the other rules of the race. I think you have to finish within the allotted time (40 days) and raise the most money from your art along the way.
Quite fun to watch. I came in somewhere in the middle of their journeys, so I'll have to look for more episodes.

Ch-ch-ch-changes...
I am not superstitious.
Well, okay, I knock on wood now and then (usually my poor noggin). I spit when a black cat crosses my path. I try never to break a mirror.
But I don't believe that any of these things is going to effect any given situation. It's more of a habit.
And I am a creature of habit. I like my days to have a certain sameness. I find comfort in routine.
But we are up to some big-time changes around here. And I am feeling more than a little anxiety over it all. Not a bad sort of anxiety, but a sense of unease, nonetheless.
And I can't really talk about any of it! Because, you know, I might jinx it.
So cross your fingers for us, okay? :)

A little bit of Saturday trivia...
Runts...
I garnered this sugary-sweet trivia from Cash Cab (love that show on Discovery channel). Runts were created when the manufacturer was looking for a neater way to package/market Pixy Stix. If you're not familiar with Pixy Stix, they are basically just drinking straws filled with fruit-flavored sugar, which you then tip up and pour into your mouth. It's one of those things kids love and parents hate.
The solution really upped the cute factor too!

Seven random thoughts on the 7th...
1. It is lovely having the grandsons spend the weekend.
2. It is really wonderful to take them to a nice restaurant for lunch and have your waitress compliment their good manners.
3. It is fun to sit in a dark theater and be pleasantly surprised by how much you are enjoying a movie that the boys picked out. (Despicable Me) And it is really priceless to listen to your husband's laughter throughout...I think I've mentioned here before how much I like to watch him watch cartoons.
4. It is miserable falling asleep sitting up, and waking in the early morning with a bent neck.
5. It makes me happy to realize that in a little over a month, it will start cooling off some.
6. It is exciting looking forward to the next week off, and having a fun trip to Ikea planned during it.
7. It is such a blessing to have a hot shower and clean pajamas and a comfortable bed to snuggle into.

Love those 80s movies...
I loved Caroline's Friday Five this week...favorite 80s movies. That was possibly my favorite decade for movies. I couldn't limit myself to five, so I'm listing eight movies from the 80s that I have watched and rewatched, and I cannot possibly surf past them if I see one playing on TV.
When Harry Met Sally - 1989
favorite scene: the dinner where they're trying to fix each other up with their best friends.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - 1986
favorite scene: the parade, definitely
The Princess Bride - 1987
favorite scene: the battle of wits with the Sicilian...inconceivable!
Sixteen Candles - 1984
favorite scene: the grandparents answering Sam's phone
Baby Boom - 1987
favorite scenes: finding out her well is dry...'I'm tired of being yupped and noped by you guys...another five thousand...aaaahhhh!' ...and then regaining consciousness in the vet's office, 'I wasn't going to put you to sleep or anything.'
Local Hero - 1983
favorite scene: every single one!

No deep thoughts here...
But this too shall pass.
I'm trying to focus on the real blessings in this (I mean seriously...we have been incredibly blessed) and learning the lessons we are meant to learn...and trying to steer others toward looking for the blessings and lessons too, without being preachy.
So I've been escaping my thoughts by playing games and reading and working and playing more games. I've made some really, really good tortilla soup...my best effort ever. Anyone else out there enjoying the truly perfect avocados that are in the markets this year? YUM!
My office health challenge is ongoing. I'm behind, but I have always believed that the tortoise was the true genius in his race with the hare. And since it's not solely about weight, but overall health, I'm feeling really good about things. I know with a certainty that I am healthier each day. Are you ready for this? ...no more Cokes from Sonic! Of course, I still go to Sonic (gotta have my magic ice!), but I'm choosing unsweetened iced tea.
I have the week off from work next week. I have some plans to get some work done around the house. And I'm hoping I can get some kiddos here for a sleepover before school starts. It might be tough, since all but Chloe have sports practices to work around. Poor little Chloe missed the age cutoff for soccer by one day.
Enough rambling.
