What I'm reading Wednesday...

Labyrinth by Kate Mosse

One Small Step Can Change Your Life by Robert Maurer, Ph.D.

Labyrinth is on my 2013 reading challenge list, and slow going.  This morning I saw the One Small Step lying on a table top and picked it up to browse through.

Just now, when I took the photos, I realized the similarities in the covers.  Hmmm...a labyrinth and a maze. I wonder what my subconscious is brooding about.  :)

Today is Tuesday...

...and I am making napkin rings out of toilet paper tubes and duct tape.  Kind of redneck, I know.

We use cloth napkins at our house, and with the recent influx of family members at the table we have been having a lot of napkin laundry.  The cure I learned from the other Kathleen is to have an identifiable napkin ring for each diner, so that if their napkin is barely used they can keep it on the table for the next meal.

I don't have a variety of napkin rings, so since they are needed quickly and only temporarily, this solution popped into my head.  I was just going to use the cardboard tubes, but wasn't sure they could survive a month's worth of use.

Bon appetit, y'all!

Full house...

  vs

So the kids got moved into our house yesterday.  They are hoping it will only be for a month or so.  Tomorrow is the closing on the house they just sold, but on the new house front, the bank has been very slow acting getting things moving.

They didn't even sit down for a minute before they started preparing dinner for us.  Carey's birthday is this coming week, but he will be working out of town, so they wanted to celebrate his BIG birthday while he is home.

The girls were running around in their dress-up clothes, when daddy appropriated the toque and apron Chloe was wearing.  Goofball.  I told him I would be blogging his photo...so he made up his own caption.  He makes points for his off-the-cuff play on words...and he and Kasey make MAJOR points for producing a meal WAY better than anything that could come out of a can.

The children were fed before the grown ups, when one of them got up from the table to perform a spontaneous gymnastics maneuver.
Daddy (still wearing his chef garb), "Is it dinner time or                      gymnastics time?
Caitlyn, "Is it dinner time or dress-up time?
Score one for the munchkins.

What I'm reading Wednesday...

The Son by Philipp Meyer

I've been wanting to read this since I heard it reviewed on the radio.  I happened to log onto my public library website the other day, and saw that it was available to reserve with only one ahead of me on the list.  I reserved it, and was emailed within just a few days that it was ready for check out.

After that last book took me nearly a month to finish, I thought I was losing my reading mojo.  But it all came back to me...I finished all 650 pages of this one in one weekend.  The historic aspect was very interesting, as it is set in the area where I live, but I was left feeling pretty unsatisfied since none of the characters were very likable.

The Time Between by Karen White

While I was at the library, I picked up this one as well.  I had seen it on Amazon and thought about getting it, and probably would have, but didn't want to pay full price.  So I was pretty happy to see it available on the 'new' shelf in the library...love borrowing for free.  :)  I just started it, so I'm not sure how it's going yet.

Pet peeves revisited...

Time for another pet-peeve list.  Sorry, but I need to get it out of my system.  I'll keep it short, because it is late, and because the majority make me sound like a cranky old fogy.

It grates on my last nerve...

...when someone stands up and walks away from their chair without pushing it under the table or desk.

....when contemporary users take perfectly good words, and change them to suit their whim when it could have been used perfectly well without change.  ie: securitization?

...when drivers cross all lanes when making a turn instead of turning into the nearest lane.

...when someone prepares a sandwich or a bowl of cereal and leaves crumbs or grains of sugar all over the counter.

...when someone constantly interrupts others when they are speaking.

...when anyone moves my stuff!  Yes, I like ALL of my pencils in one cup, ALL of my pens in another cup, and ALL of my markers in a third cup.  Hey, I don't come over to your desk and co-mingle all of your stuff!

...when I compose an email or a comment, and accidentally delete it right before I finish...and then I re-type it and accidentally delete it again!

Okay, that's enough.  I'll feel better.  Thanks!

Little blogs with lots to say...

I have been following Caroline's blog for a LONG time now (measured in blog years, anyway).  Not only do I get a kick out of what she writes about, but she has turned me on to lots of other great blogs and efforts (yearly reading challenges and a fun way to donate Free Rice among others).

This week I noted her post about little blogs with lots to say, and again found myself in agreement and went to check it out further at Curls and Coffee and thus met Amy.  Pop over and consider joining.  At the very least, read a few posts from the bloggers who have already joined up...good people.

Seven random thoughts on the 7th...

1.  It is H-O-T hot!  Over one hundred every day.  I am trying to think cool thoughts.

2.  Sometimes hot temperatures bring on hot tempers...and Monday was my day.  My boss is such a good guy.  He just agreed with everything I said that day.  LOL  Then today he brings me his I-phone and plays me this little youtube jewel...and he tells me it's my theme song.  LOL  Warning: mild profanity

3.  We have a little plumbing problem with the garage apartment.  Seems the sewer line does not actually run to the septic system.  Another $4,000?  Sure why not.  In for a penny, in for a pound.  It's not exactly livable without it.

4.  Soon all of our children and all of our grandchildren will be living under our roofs...temporarily.  My grandchildren think I'm going to be making them breakfast every morning!  Ha!  I'll be gone before they even get up.  :)  Kasey and Beau have sold their house and have to be out by the 23rd.  The purchase of their new home has been hitting a few snags...there is now a lawyer involved.  Pray for us all.

5.  I think I'm going to get a new couch out of opening our home to the family.  Kasey and Beau have THE most comfortable sectional.  I have been campaigning for them to buy new furniture for YEARS, and, you know, hand down the old one to me.  :)  Now I have convinced them to bring the sofa with them when they move in here, so that there is room for everyone to sit comfortably...and then I'm not going to let it out of the house.  Bwahahaha....

6.  I'm a nice person (except for this past Monday).  Occasionally it gets me in trouble.  Lately there have been homeless people hanging out in the shady porch of the shopping center where we are located.  I try to be respectful and compassionate.  However, one is a young man, and he has begun to drop in the office occasionally.  I have to balance compassion with my responsibility to my job  and my safety.  I am alone at the office a lot of the time, and I  have started having to keep the door locked.  My boss called the home office today to see about getting a remote door lock, so that I could unlock it remotely from my desk when a customer arrives...it would cost $3,000.  I don't see that in our future.  We have been talking (okay, mostly I have been talking) about moving to a better location when our lease is up.

7.  I have given up on trying to go to bed earlier.   At my last visit, my doctor said I wasn't really sleeping anyway, so even if I was in bed for twelve hours, I would not be getting good rest.  I have been using that as a free pass to only be in bed for about six hours.  Somehow I don't think that's what she had in mind either.

What I'm reading Wednesday...

Time and Again by Jack Finney

This has been renting space on my bookshelf for WAY too long.  I finally decided to include it in the 2013 Reading Challenge.  I feel like I have been at it F-O-R-E-V-E-R.  In truth, somewhat less than a month.  Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I would give up on it totally, however...a) it came highly recommended...and b) it seemed easier than some of the other books that are still in the challenge line up needing to be read by the end of the year.

Anyway...take some of Einstein's String Theory, a little self hypnosis, and lots and LOTS of historical details and you pretty much have it.  I'm almost done.  Thank heavens.

Construction Day 11...

Welcome back.  The construction crew has taken their tools and gone home!  They will come back to install some doors that they are waiting on delivery of, and they will have to address a plumbing issue that was not discovered until the last day, but other than that it is done!

Allow me to show you around.  I'm repeating a lot of photos, but it shows the progression.

This is the stair entrance before...

and this was the stair entrance on Day 4...and they look pretty much the same on Day 11, so I'm not going to put in another photo.  We may paint the steps later and put up a handrail.

When we reach the top of the stairs, we turn into the entrance of the apartment.  The first room is the living area...shown here before...

...and this was what it looks like on Day 4 with the walls enclosed.

...and this is what it looks like on Day 11...finished but for paint.

Going to the far end of the apartment is the bath... before...

...and the bath Day 4 had the shower installed.

...and the bath Day 11.

The shelving next to the shower...looks a little catawampus in this photo, but that is due to the shadows and the angled ceiling.

Across from the shower is the vanity area before...

...and the vanity area on Day 4.

...and the vanity area on Day 11.  Mirror will go up after painting.

This photo was taken just as I exited the bath.  This shows the bedroom before...

...and this is the bedroom Day 4.

...and this is the bedroom Day 11...done but for paint.

This shows the bedroom from its entrance, and shows the closet.

I mentioned in the last post about the small 'extra' room off of the bedroom (entrance seen two photos above, behind the door from the bedroom to the living room).  This shows its interior, and on the right side of the dormer, you see a low, angled door...

...it leads to extra storage under the eaves.

This photo is taken from the bedroom door facing back into the living area...before...

...and here was basically the same area Day 4.  The doorway seen straight ahead is the stair entrance/exit.

...and here it is on Day 11, done but for paint.

This was the plan for the right side of the living area...the kitchen.

But due to a misunderstanding as to where the electrical outlets went in and a spacing issue, this is how it turned out.  I'm not thrilled that the refrigerator had to go in the dormer, but it's okay. The other dormer on the left side of the photo has another cabinet.  (I'll tell you more about where those cabinets came from in a future post.)

This is the inside of the small pantry area.  That doorway at the back leads to yet more storage space under the eaves.  It will have one of the doors that the crew will be back to install soon.

And now we are back at the top of the stairs heading down...before...

...and the top of the stairs on Day 4.

And finally the top of the stairs on Day 11 with flooring on the landing and in the storage space.

This brings us to the end of our tour.  I'm not sure Jared will let me in to take photos after he has started moving in, so you may never see it painted or furnished.  :)

Glad you came to witness a LONG-awaited project come to fruition.  Again, please watch your step on the way down...still no handrails yet.  :)
